The Disappearing US Middle Class

It's become a commonplace observation that Americans below the top of the income distribution have found their real incomes essentially stagnant or worse recently. The attached article from the Financial Times discusses this at length, mostly in the context of the Great Recession. The article also raises the interesting Social Scientific question: why has this happened? A corollary question, not raised - is this uniquely a US phenomenon?
